STAC (Smart Things Accelerator Centre), Scotland’s industry-led technology accelerator, has appointed Jim Rowan as its new Chair as it launches a £15 million investment fund to support high-growth Scottish technology companies.

The Glasgow-born former CEO of Volvo Cars and Dyson brings three decades of global technology leadership to the role. As Chair, Rowan will lead STAC’s strategic direction, use his international networks to open global markets for portfolio companies, and champion Scottish deep tech on the world stage.

His appointment coincides with the launch of STAC’s first fund, focused on Scottish startups ready to scale across robotics, AI, quantum computing, photonics and advanced manufacturing.

Rowan most recently served as CEO and President of Volvo Cars, overseeing record profits in 2023 and 2024, and has previously founded two successful start-ups. Commenting on his appointment, he said STAC is “building the system to turn Scotland’s enormous intellectual horsepower into globally competitive companies”, adding that the challenge now is to strengthen the connections between academia, industry, government and finance.

Founded in 2021, STAC operates a unique industry-funded accelerator model, connecting startups with corporate partners including RBS, Plexus, Eurofins and Pelion. To date, it has supported 120 startups, facilitated £50 million in investment, created 400 jobs, and has the highest density of women entrepreneurs among UK deep tech accelerators.

In September 2024, STAC opened thebeyond, a 22,000 sq ft facility at Skypark.

Paul Wilson, CEO and co-founder of STAC, said Rowan’s appointment and the £15m fund directly challenge the idea that Scottish tech companies must relocate to scale. “This combination of global leadership, industry partnerships and capital means companies can access international markets while keeping their headquarters and innovation here in Scotland,” he said.

Outgoing Chair Richard Lewis will remain on the board as an advisor, welcoming Rowan’s appointment as a reflection of STAC’s growing ambition and global reach.
