The pioneering Routes into STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) event took place recently to raise awareness among teachers about the wide variety of options available in the sector for students aged 16 and over.
City of Glasgow College Principal and Chief Executive, Paul Little, said, “Our Riverside campus represents a multi-million pound investment not only in maritime education but also in STEM subjects. We were the first College to be awarded Investors in Innovation this year also so our commitment to continually delivering innovative and unique learning and teaching techniques directly linked to industry needs is clear. I am delighted that our Super College hosted this important inaugural event with EDT to encourage more focus on STEM.”
Meg Wright, Director of EDT Scotland said, “Teachers have an important role in the lives of young people and it is vital they are equipped with the correct information to help them advise students. We were delighted to launch the first Routes into STEM course for teachers at City of Glasgow College where the teachers got hands-on experience of robotics as well as finding out what the college has to offer young people.”
City of Glasgow College STEM Development Manager, Linzi Shearer, said, “This was a great opportunity to work with teachers to promote the integration of STEM into the secondary school curriculum and to highlight the various STEM education, training and employment opportunities available to school leavers. Our college recognises the benefits of working in partnership and sees this initiative as an ideal opportunity to extend our commitment to addressing gender imbalance within STEM.”
The Engineering Development Trust operates STEM activities in schools across Scotland. Their work related learning programmes provide opportunities for young people to enhance their technical, personal and employability skills through industry-led projects, industrial placements and specialised taster courses.
Routes into STEM is the first teachers’ programme in the UK which EDT is running alongside City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Caledonian University and Aecom.
