A pioneering new course launched in Glasgow is set to strengthen Scotland’s MedTech pipeline, with ambitions to take innovations from concept through to commercialisation on a global stage.

The new MedTech Innovation MSc at the University of Glasgow has been developed in collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and a range of innovation hubs and industry partners. The programme is designed to bridge the long-standing gap between academic research and real-world healthcare delivery.

Positioned as a first-of-its-kind offering in Scotland, the 12-month course will equip students with end-to-end knowledge of the MedTech innovation lifecycle — from identifying unmet clinical needs and developing solutions, through to navigating regulation, implementation, commercialisation and scaling.

The MSc, which launches in September, will place students at the intersection of healthcare, technology and business, with a strong focus on digital, data and AI-driven solutions. Participants will also benefit from placements with NHS bodies, government organisations and leading MedTech companies, gaining practical, real-world experience.

The programme culminates in an Innovation Day, where students will pitch their projects to NHS leaders, investors and industry stakeholders, with opportunities to access further funding and support.

Programme partners are:

  • The West of Scotland Innovation Hub (WoSIH)
  • NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
  • SafeHaven
  • The National Robotarium
  • Scottish Ambulance Service
  • Industry leaders at both national and global stage, including Scottish SMEs and spinouts such as Tile Bio and Lumino

Katriona Brooksbank, Innovation Lead at the West of Scotland Innovation Hub and Programme Prosper and Director said: “I am so excited to share the MedTech Innovation Masters programme which covers healthcare innovation opportunity identification and end to end evidence generation as part of a route to get MedTech products safely to market.”

The launch reinforces Glasgow’s position at the heart of Scotland’s high-value MedTech ecosystem, where academic research, clinical expertise and industry collaboration are coming together to drive the next wave of healthcare innovation.
