Glasgow Startup’s are to benefit as UK property developer Pioneer Group has announced it will construct 72,800 square feet of lab space, which will be available to tech firms in Glasgow.

The new lab development, to be built at Pioneer’s BioCity Glasgow campus, has received planning permission.

It will be available to startups, scaleups and major life science companies in the region. The lab space will provide much-needed facilities to the Scottish biotech industry, which has raised £253m over the last five years, according to a report from Pioneer.

“Providing suitable accommodation for scale-ups is crucial. Modern biotech and tech bio companies have high standards for lab space and amenities, and crucially they demand proximity to life science cluster locations to support hiring the best and brightest talent,” said John Mackenzie, director, Scotland at Pioneer Group.

“Our two new buildings’ currently planned two phases, will be plugged into an already pioneering innovation ecosystem within BioCity Glasgow.”

The new development marks Pioneer Group’s continued expansion into Scotland, which Mackenzie said will help the country “retain, as well as attract, startup companies and talent”.

The project will come as a boost to the Scottish tech sector, which is considered one of the most exciting emerging tech hubs to watch.

London-based fintech ZIPZERO announced that it is moving its headquarters to Aberdeen, with the CEO describing Scotland as “the most fertile land for UK tech”.

Pioneer Group also recently announced major lab space expansion projects in Cardiff and Kent.
