Glasgow’s cycle hire scheme is entering an exciting new era as micromobility leader Voi Technology UK takes over as the city’s operator.
Voi is set to bring a fully electric fleet to the city for the first time, offering hirers a choice between two e-bike models tailored to trip duration and rider preference. Voi will also introduce a flexible dockless system, allowing users to park in clearly marked on-street zones instead of fixed pavement docks.
It is hoped that this approach will free up space for pedestrians and reduce infrastructure costs, making it easier to expand the scheme and adapt to demand.
The Council said that a minimum of 1,000 e-bikes will be available 24/7 at over 150 locations citywide, ensuring easy access for Glasgow’s residents and visitors, but to further boost accessibility, Voi also plans to open a physical storefront in the city.
This walk-in hub will play a key role in bridging the digital divide, offering an easy, face-to-face way to hire bikes.
“It’s great to have Voi on board for the next five years as the new operator of Glasgow’s hugely popular cycle hire scheme, offering a fully electric fleet for the first time,” said Councillor Angus Millar, city convener for climate and transport.
“On-street cycle hire offers a practical, cost-effective option to people who may not own a bike to get about the city, and in securing the scheme’s next phase of delivery with our new operator we look forward to building on its success.
“Over the coming months, people will start to see Voi rolling out a brand-new fleet of e-bikes and new-look supporting infrastructure across the city, all designed to make cycling more convenient and accessible, whether you’re commuting, meeting up with friends, or simply exploring the city.
“Opening up access to affordable, sustainable transport creates more options for everybody to get about Glasgow, and it’s great that Glaswegians will continue to be able to take advantage of cycle hire with this refreshed scheme.”
Once live, the e-bikes will be available via the Voi app, with flexible hire options including monthly subscriptions, daily passes, and pay-as-you-go pricing.
Glasgow’s cycle hire scheme has been operated by nextbike by TIER since its launch in 2014. The scheme has recorded over 2.5 million hires and attracted 250,000 registered users, reflecting its popularity and impact in encouraging active travel across the city.
A four-month mobilisation period to the new provider will start, during which Voi will roll out the new e-bikes, install supporting infrastructure, and ensure a smooth transition.
