Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Honorary Professor Nicola Steedman has just been appointed Deputy Chief Medical Officer by the Scottish Government.
Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said he was “delighted” to welcome Professor Steedman and Professor Graham Ellis to their new roles as new Deputy Chief Medical Officers (DCMOs).
He added: “They will all play a key role in ensuring that health and social care advice informs our work across the board and adds value to our pandemic response.”
Professor Steedman was already in place as interim DCMO on a temporary basis. She takes up her post with immediate effect.
GCU Professor of Sexual Health and HIV Claudia Estcourt said: “We are immensely proud that Prof Steedman’s DCMO appointment is now permanent.
“We look forward to learning more about her insights on national health policy leadership and how research can better address priorities as we try to meet post COVID-19 health challenges.”
When she was confirmed as Honorary Professor at GCU earlier this year, Professor Steedman described it as an “absolute honour”.
“I am really grateful for this opportunity to develop my relationship with some of the best health experts in the world and share my knowledge with staff and students,” she added.
Professor Steedman already has close research links with GCU’s Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus research group and is a key part of Professor Estcourt’s HIV prevention programme.
She also championed GCU Professors Sharon Hutchinson and David Goldberg’s Hepatitis C epidemiology research as part of Scotland’s Hepatitis C elimination strategy.
