CRUK researchers in the city region focus particularly on working to develop better ways to diagnose and treat pancreatic and bowel cancers, and chronic myeloid leukaemia. They work in partnership with the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the CRUK Beatson Institute.
Their current research builds on previous successes:
- CRUK scientists in Glasgow first manufactured the brain cancer drug, Temozolomide. Thousands of people now benefit from treatment with this drug worldwide.
- CRUK researchers in the city helped uncover some of the secrets of p53 – a molecule that is faulty in many types of cancers. Their work is helping open new avenues of investigation that could lead to future treatments.
- The CRUK team in Glasgow found that faulty stem cells in our bowel are likely to drive some forms of bowel cancer. This pioneering discovery has provided insight into how some cancers develop and could lead to life saving treatments.
