Pioneering Legal Innovation

in climate change

As the proud host of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), Glasgow has positioned itself as a leading city in addressing the climate crisis. In alignment with this commitment, the University of Strathclyde has launched its first social enterprise spinout, C2LI – Climate Change Legal Initiative, with a mission to combat global warming through legal education.

C2LI has developed the Climate Change Litigation Knowledge Hub, an open-access online platform that simplifies complex climate litigation cases into brief, understandable summaries, making them accessible to a wider audience.

C2LI aims to support organisations in navigating climate-related legislation and enhance compliance. The platform covers climate change legal cases from 30 countries, with plans to expand to 20 more countries this year and achieve global coverage within five years.

C2LI operates as a Community Interest Company, meaning all profits are reinvested into its mission, rather than distributed. This model ensures that the company’s efforts remain focused on its social and environmental objectives. C2LI aims to help businesses and public sector organisations stay informed about relevant laws, thus reducing insurance risks and supporting climate-positive actions.

Strathclyde’s Chief Commercial Officer, Gillian Docherty OBE, highlighted C2LI’s potential impact, stating, “This initiative represents a crucial step in ensuring compliance with climate laws and addressing the climate emergency effectively.”

“Climate change is impacting every area of life, and every area of law and we are in a critical decade to take decisive action. To get to where we need to be – keeping global warming down – the law is a really powerful tool to get us there.”

Dr Kate McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer of C2LI
