Novosound:
Revolutionising Ultrasound Sensing with Innovative Thin-Film Technology
At the heart of Scotland’s innovation in sensor technology is Novosound, a groundbreaking company founded in 2018 as the University of the West of Scotland’s first spinout.
With an initial £500k in funding from the Scottish Enterprise High Growth spin-out process, Novosound has revolutionised the field with its pioneering approach to printable ultrasound sensors. The company’s advanced thin-film technology, developed through its in-house design and manufacturing expertise, provides a flexible, temperature-resistant, lightweight, and compact core material capable of high-resolution imaging. This cutting-edge solution positions Novosound at the forefront of ultrasound sensor technology and underscores Glasgow’s growing influence in high-tech innovation.
Based at BioCity, Novosound serves a diverse range of sectors including Oil and Gas, Aerospace, and Semiconductors with its advanced sensors for ultrasonic non-destructive testing. The company is also innovating with new technologies, including:
The Kelpie
The world’s first flexible imaging sensor designed for detecting flaws in complex geometries such as wind turbine blades and aircraft components.
The Slanj platform
Uses technology to provide deeper insights into body biometrics, such as blood pressure and dehydration, surpassing the capabilities of optical, magnetic, and electrical sensors.
The Ceilidh
A fully patented system which seeks to addresses industry challenges such as corrosion under composite wraps, offering what a ‘significant breakthrough in non-destructive testing.
The Belenus
Permanently installed sensors for continuous high-temperature asset monitoring, aimed at reducing downtime in the oil and gas sector.
Since its inception, Novosound has expanded to 30 staff and achieved a six-figure turnover. With a vision to expand into medical imaging and wearable markets, Novosound is poised to capitalise on the projected growth of the global NDT market ($7.3 billion), medical imaging ($10.46 billion), and wearables ($27 billion), collectively valued at $44.76 billion by 2022.
Dave Hughes, CEO and Founder of Novosound“From Novosound’s early spin-out days to its commercialisation and the launch of our Advanced NDT product family, it has been an incredible journey. We have a really exciting future and together with our highly skilled team, I am looking forward to accelerating our plans for rapid growth and creating value for our customers and partners with our ground-breaking, innovative NDT products.“
