My Stories:
Widening Access to Museums Through Digital Innovation
My Stories is a pioneering interactive tool designed to enhance young people’s engagement with art and exhibits at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Supported by The Hunter Foundation, it allows users to digitally overlay speech bubbles or emojis on paintings, creating a personalised museum experience.
Developed with input from school pupils and college students, My Stories incorporates feedback from diverse groups, including the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit. Jennifer Keenan, Learning and Activities Curator, emphasises that the tool connects young people to museum objects on their own terms, without needing historical context.
Through games, activities, and quizzes, young people are encouraged to express their thoughts about the museum’s collections. QR codes in 22 galleries prompt users to think critically about the art and the artist’s intent, making the experience more interactive.
Students involved in My Stories expressed pride in their contributions. Murdo Macdonald, Acting Depute Headteacher at Bellahouston Academy, noted that allowing students to explore the museum independently has fostered a greater interest in humanities. With 60% of Bellahouston Academy’s pupils from BAME backgrounds, My Stories plays a crucial role in making cultural spaces more accessible.
“Since I’ve worked at Bellahouston I’ve taken all the S1s to Kelvingrove for the day and they curate their own visit.”
Murdo Macdonald, Acting Depute Headteacher, Bellahouston Academy“Instead of a teacher telling them what to look at or a parent telling them to look at the same things they were told to look at by their parents, it’s a mark of starting secondary school that we were giving them the freedom to wander around and explore.”
