Hydrogen Vehicle Systems
Unveils Innovative Hydrogen-Powered HGV
The UK now has the most ambitious regulatory framework for the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) of any country in the world, with the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate outlining that 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain will now be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035.
One company leading the charge on the EV transition is Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), a Glasgow-based pioneer in hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. HVS has unveiled its groundbreaking 40-tonne hydrogen-electric Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) – marking the debut of the first indigenous UK-designed and built hydrogen HGV, developed entirely from scratch.
Founded in 2017, HVS focuses on the ground-up design and development of zero-emission hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. The company comprises industry specialists, with vast experience in the automotive, energy, hydrogen technology, power electronics, sustainability and environmental management fields.
With government targets and global goals to cut emissions, HVS and its cutting-edge technology could be pivotal in meeting these emissions reduction objectives.
Key Features and Innovations:
- Range and Refuelling: The new HGV boasts a class-leading range of up to 370 miles (600 km) and can be refuelled in just 20 minutes, similar to refuelling a diesel truck.
- Design and Efficiency: The vehicle features a revolutionary design that enhances aerodynamics, payload capacity, weight distribution, and driver ergonomics. This innovative approach aims to set new standards in commercial vehicle design.
- Advanced Powertrain: The HGV is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system that provides longer range and faster refuelling compared to battery-electric technology. The integrated powertrain includes a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) to recapture braking energy, controlled by HVS’s advanced SEMAS system for optimal efficiency and durability.
- Zero Emissions: The vehicle emits only water vapour, making it a truly zero-emission option for the haulage industry.
The University of Strathclyde played a key role in the successful delivery of this groundbreaking project by providing support and conducting rigorous testing at PNDC. Established in 2013, PNDC is a cutting-edge research, testing, and demonstration facility dedicated to advancing whole energy systems. With a focus on de-risking and accelerating innovative electricity, heat, and transport solutions, PNDC is instrumental in driving technologies that can significantly contribute to achieving net-zero emissions.
Jawad Khursheed, Chief Executive Officer“Our zero-emission trucks are a key part of decarbonising the logistics sector. Hydrogen is the perfect fuel for the haulage industry, offering long ranges and quick refuelling thanks to stations being easily integrated into existing key transport networks.”
