The university’s commitment to social mobility has led to a nomination in the category of Social Mobility Champion.

Professor Pamela Gillies, principal and vice-chancellor of GCU, has been nominated alongside senior leaders from Marks & Spencer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Grant Thornton and law firm DLA Piper.

The UK Social Mobility Awards is organised by the charity Making The Leap and the winners will be announced in October.

Organisers were impressed with GCU’s consistent success in widening access to higher education, the University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and its innovative and transformational approach to enhancing social mobility at home and abroad.

Tunde Banjoko OBE, chief executive and founder of the UK Social Mobility Awards, said: “We are delighted to have shortlisted our third cohort of finalists for the UK Social Mobility Awards, having received entries from many fantastic organisations and individuals.

“The awards were created to encourage organisations across the UK to see social mobility as a business imperative and embed core strategies to advance it. While we celebrate the finalists, we are clear that this is a conversation and a movement for everybody.”
