The University of Strathclyde’s annual competition, Images of Research, recently launched this year’s exhibition with a week-long residency at Engage with Strathclyde – the University’s flagship public engagement event – and was warmly received by the public. The seven category winners have been announced and now it’s over to you to vote for the overall winner.
The competition and resulting exhibition showcase the diversity and impact of the research being undertaken across the University. The Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sir Jim McDonald, opened this year’s launch event saying: “As a leading international technological university, we pride ourselves on academic excellence with impact. The compelling images on display provide an insight to the wealth of our research that will pave the way for new products and services, inform decision-making, influence policy, improve health and support sustainable economic growth in today’s world.”
Janine Capaldi, Images of Research Co-ordinator, added: “The competition provides our researchers and academics with a fun way to reach out to the public and communicate the importance of our research. The images are accompanied by brief and simple explanations, and some entrants have also created short digital stories to provide further insight, making the exhibition very accessible to young and old alike.
“The aim of the exhibition is not only to demonstrate the impact and value of our work but also to inspire the next generation of researchers.”
If you missed the exhibition launch, you can catch it again at Drygate Brewery from 15th to 18th June, as part of Glasgow Science Festival, as it begins its twelve month tour of Scotland and beyond. You can also attend the Winners’ Reception on 15th June, from 5.30pm, to hear the overall winner and two runners-up announced.

This year’s competition celebrates the launch of the University’s new strategic themes with a category devoted to each: Health and Wellbeing, Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and Materials, Ocean, Air and Space, Society and Policy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Measurement Science and Enabling Technologies.
