Continuing our series of Engage with Strathclyde Week blogs, Janine Capaldi brings the future into focus with a snapshot of the annual competition that showcases innovative research from the University.

The University of Strathclyde’s Images of Research competition is now a firm feature in the University calendar and a fun way to reach out to the public whilst demonstrating the importance of our work. Now in its sixth year, the competition provides a platform for our academics, researchers and students to showcase their innovative research and its impact on society.

This year we have had a record number of entries, which made shortlisting the final 42 a tough job, but now the team are really excited about the big reveal to the public at the exhibition launch night on Tuesday 2nd May. Always a popular event during our flagship Engage with Strathclyde week (2nd to 5th May), attendees will be the first to see the images and hear the announcement of the category winners, which will then go forward to a public vote.

This year’s exhibition, ‘The Future in Focus’, coincided with the launch of the University’s new strategic themes, increasing the categories to seven (so more opportunities to win!). The categories are:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Energy
  • Advanced Manufacturing and Materials
  • Ocean, Air and Space
  • Society and Policy
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Measurement Science and Enabling Technologies

The exhibition naturally sparks curiosity and visitors often want to know more about our research. So once again, some of our entrants have gone the extra mile, creating a digital story to provide further insight to their work. Using augmented-reality technology, exhibition visitors can watch the images come to life before their eyes on any mobile device.

If you miss the initial exhibition in May there are further opportunities to see the images, including:

  • Drygate Brewery: 15th to 19th June 2017
  • Glasgow Science Centre, riverside panels: from August 2017
  • European Parliament: October 2017

We’re still finalising some exhibitions so to keep up-to-date with further announcements, follow Images of Research on Twitter @StrathImages and like us on Facebook at Images of Research.
