Kelvingrove Unlocked
Pop over to Glasgow’s West End to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and find groups of researchers from the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde. They’ll introduce you to some of the latest research on architecture, history, and politics through interactive displays and activities. You’ll even get a change to take a special guided tour of some of the buildings amazing architectural features.
Join Dr Cristina González-Longo (Department of Architecture of the University of Strathclyde), on a short tour of the building highlighting its architectural design (including its Spanish connection) and construction, its designation as Category A Listed building and the conservation challenges. Cristina’s research group deals with the challenges of conserving built heritage while allowing changes to adapt historic buildings to contemporary uses, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. On the tour, she’ll show you how they use a thermal camera to see the visible and invisible effects of water in the building.
Meanwhile historians from the University of Glasgow will be uncovering some of Erskine’s amazing history in treated wounded soldiers in World War 1 and our scientists will have with games and exhibits to uncover the mysteries of sleep.

Riverside Museum Unlocked
Visit Glasgow’s multi-award winning transport museum on Saturday 1st October and call into the Learning Space to find out what it’s like to be a researcher through hands-on activities and fun for all the family.
Become an explorer for the day as you get hands on and up close with cutting edge research. Gain superhuman vision with our engineers and discover how tiny bacteria can be used to help build roads and railways.
Researchers from Strathclyde and Glasgow Universities will also be joined by Construction Scotland, a group driving forward the construction industry in Scotland, generating £21.4 billion per year. Construction Scotland will be sharing some of their work looking at creating the infrastructure for renewable energy, preserving our historic environment, and building the roads which transport our whisky and salmon overseas. The team will be demonstrating how the Innovation Centre is ‘industrialising and digitising construction’. Leave time to try our virtual reality experience!
Come along to meet the Nano Detectives! Anastasia, Alastair, Gillian and Hazel are researchers who use light and tiny “nanoparticles” to study different types of cancer. They’ll be bringing their research to the Riverside Museum some come along to find out how you can use your own “nano-sensor” to sniff out smells, find out how materials change in character when they are really, really small, and create your own “nano-art” and 3D hologram projector to take with you.
