This week in our countdown to Explorathon 2017 on the 29th and 30th of September we have some singing and some scares as we visit two more of the events celebrating Glasgow’s research.
Broadway Reads The Victorians
29th September, 7pm
Victorian lives and culture have long been a source of fascination, time and time again we delve into this period finding interesting stories and new ways to tell them – often through song and dance! Join us as we explore how Victorian novels became blockbuster musicals. Featuring live performances from Mad Props Theatre.
We will be ‘Reviewing the Situation’ and invite you to ‘Attend the Tale of Sweeney Todd’, as we guide you through the ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ world of Broadway’s Neo-Victorian musical adaptations.
This interactive lecture/concert will take you on a journey from page to stage of famous Broadway musicals, including Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables and some lesser-known, but highly entertaining, shows, such as The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Jekyll and Hyde. We will look at how the Broadway musical encourages us to view the Victorians.

Research Cinema: Get Out
29th September, 7pm
A night at the movies with a difference! A film screening of new cult horror “Get Out” followed by a panel discussion on the film and representations of race, gender, disability and sexuality in film.
In new cult film Get Out (Jordan Peel, 2017), African-American photographer Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) heads for a weekend in the country with his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) to meet her parents for the first time. What follows is a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries that reveal the horror of casual racism in liberal society. View the trailer below:
This screening is accompanied by a panel discussion led by researchers in Film and Television Studies (University of Glasgow) focusing on issues of diversity onscreen and behind the scenes:
Dr Lizelle Bisschoff (African and Black British cinema), Dr Amy Holdsworth (disability on screen), Dr Rebecca Harrison (film history and colonial cinema) @BeccaEHarrison, and Dr Lisa W Kelly (gender in film and television) @lisakelly01.
We also welcome Melanie Hoyes, UK Filmography researcher at the British Film Institute, to discuss the diversity data she has acquired on ethnicity in UK film and the BFI’s Black Star Project.
