Images of Research returns this May to showcase the work of staff and students at the University of Strathclyde. Grant Thomson and Rachel Clark from the Engage with Strathclyde team tell us where and when you can explore the exhibition in 2015.

Images of Research is an annual competition and exhibition that’s been promoting the work of the research community at the University of Strathclyde since 2012. It’s an engaging way for staff and students to showcase their work to the public and show how they’re tackling real world challenges. The exhibition showcases about 40 images each year. It opens annually as part of the Engage with Strathclyde week of events, this year it’s the 5th-8th May, 2015 and for the first time, it’ll be housed in the new Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde.

The Opening Night of the exhibition always draws a crowd (register here to attend), it’s when the four category winners are announced following review of all competition entries by a panel of distinguished judges. It’s then up to you, the public, to cast your vote for the overall winner which will be announced at an event taking place during the Glasgow Science Festival.

This year’s exhibition “Picturing the Future” is aligned with the city-wide “Glasgow’s Green Year” theme. The categories are:

  • Energy;
  • Environmental, social and economic sustainability;
  • Urban and public health; and
  • Innovation.

A new and exciting addition for the 2015 competition is the use of digital storytelling and augmented reality technology to enhance the exhibition. The Images team, in collaboration with Chris Thomson from Jisc, have developed a training programme and online resources to enable Images entrants to create their own digital story and share more about their work with the public.

Visitors to the exhibition can now see the still images come to life through the use of augmented reality technology. Simply hold your smartphone or tablet up to the image and watch the image turn into a video!
