To celebrate this wonderful achievement the Health Secretary, Jeane Freeman, visited the hospital on Tuesday, July 30.
She met a number of staff including NHSGGC’s Chairman, John Brown, clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals, domestics and porters to offer her personal thanks to the and everyone who works in the hospital for all their hard work in making the hospital one of the top 100 in the world.
Glasgow Royal Infirmary is the only Scottish Hospital to make the top-notch list, which included top facilities in Germany, Japan, Switzerland and the United States.
The hospitals on this list are at the forefront of adapting to new challenges while providing outstanding patient care.
They range from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, with its peerless educational arm; to Singapore General Hospital, which pursues clinical research and offers outstanding nursing; to the Charité hospital in Berlin, which employs more than half of Germany’s Nobel Prize winners in physiology or medicine.
After meeting staff Ms Freeman said: “I’ve had a chance to see exactly why Glasgow Royal Infirmary has been named among the top 100 hospitals worldwide.
“It is clear to me that the staff at Glasgow Royal Infirmary are committed to delivering high quality, safe and effective care. They also work hard to continuously improve that care.
“I want to thank each and every one of them for their drive and continued dedication.”
John Brown said: “We are delighted that Glasgow Royal Infirmary is named in the top 100 hospitals in the world and in the top 10 in the UK.
“The Royal’ has been caring for Glaswegians for 225 years now and has been at the forefront of pioneering medicine over that time.
“This recognises the hard work, dedication and excellent care for patients that is provided by our staff.”

As a city centre hospital, the GRI has a very busy ‘front door’ service for acute assessment, accident and emergency and minor injuries, seeing over 120,000 presentations a year.
