Research Impact: Making a Difference is available through the FutureLearn website and is free to all, with a paid certification option.

People on the course will discover how to co-create research impact with a wide range of stakeholders, such as industry and government, and will also learn to communicate the benefits that impact-driven research brings to the economy and society. Ultimately, they will be able to better understand, communicate and create research impact.

The course was developed by Professor Nicol Keith, director of research impact at the Institute of Cancer Research, Jonathan Scott, research manager in the life sciences sector, and Vicky Heath, freelance science writer and editor.

The course material includes a keynote presentation from Dr Susie Mitchell, Glasgow City of Science and Innovation programme director, on societal challenges and collaboration.

The course is designed to be of value to anyone involved in the higher education sector, including postgraduate students, all grades of academic staff (from young investigators to senior academics) and non-academic research professionals such as research managers.

It is now open for enrolment and begins on Monday, October 22.

Professor Nicol Keith said: “Universities worldwide are committed to realising the economic and societal impact of their research. By developing this online course with direct input from a range of stakeholders, we hope to help people understand the research impact landscape and importantly to give them tools, tactics and confidence to really make a difference. The course is interactive and we are looking forward to some lively discussions!”
