The degree is the first of its kind in the UK and the majority of the graduates have secured jobs and agents.
The degree was made possible by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and developed in partnership with Solar Bear, a theatre company specialising in drama and training for young deaf performers.
The project began when the SFC’s Innovation Voucher programme allowed Solar Bear to work with the Royal Conservatoire to develop a 10-week pilot deaf theatre short course. This led to the creation of a full short course, summer school programme and the BA degree.
SFC board member Maggie Kinloch said: “Today is a very special moment for these graduates and their friends and families. They can be very proud of what they have achieved.
“As a former deputy principal of the Royal Conservatoire and chair of the SFC’s Access and Inclusion Committee, I am very pleased to see the first cohort of this pioneering degree graduate.
“I wish them all the best for the future, and look forward to seeing many more deaf or hard of hearing students come through this course, and others across all of Scotland’s colleges and universities as we work with them to support the Scottish Government’s National Plan for British Sign Language.”
