Climate Week is a Scottish Government campaign to raise awareness of and inspire action on climate change. The aim of Climate Week is to encourage organisations across Scotland to host events that highlight the importance of reducing emissions and adapting to a changing climate.

Glasgow City Council is supporting Climate Week through a range of activities for the public to participate in with the aim of increasing their awareness of reducing their carbon footprint, energy and food costs.

Climate Week runs from 18 –22 September and each day has a designated theme centred on waste, energy, water and green travel and recycling.

Glasgow City Council has organised a range of activities for the public to participate in at the Winter Gardens, Glasgow Green, as well as free advice and demonstrations from Home Energy Scotland, Zero Waste Scotland, ‘Love Food Hate Waste and Transport Scotland.

These public events run from 11am – 3pm daily.

The full list of events taking place across the city is available here. Please check as booking may be required for some events.

Highlights of the week include an innovative dining experience ‘in a dumpster’, intended to encourage behaviour change around food waste. Zero Waste Scotland will be encouraging visitors to make their own delicious fruit smoothies by means of their own pedal power using the smoothie bike.

‘Bricks4Kidz’ Lego demonstration and workshop encouraging visitors to try out pre-built remote controlled renewables models, for example a wind turbine or build their own ‘climate friendly’ model.

Visitors to the Winter Gardens will also have the opportunity to test their driving skills with a Fuel Efficient Driving Stimulator – an exciting arcade style driving experience which educates on how to drive more fuel efficiently. In addition, information about active travel options will be available.

Countryside Rangers have a nature themed ‘lost and found’ trail marked out throughout the exotic plant area within the Winter Gardens.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, said: “Climate Week is an ideal opportunity to highlight the importance of climate change and what we all can do to reduce our energy consumption.

“Reducing our energy costs and tackling fuel poverty across the city can have a real impact on improving people’s health and quality of life.

“Through these events we hope to encourage people to take steps now and create a cleaner, greener and healthier life for everyone. Having an increased knowledge and awareness of ways you can reduce your energy use and bill is key to achieving it. The events taking place in Glasgow throughout climate week aim to raise awareness among the public of the steps you can take to reduce energy consumption.

“While we are making good progress in reaching our 2020 carbon emissions reduction target for the city, we know there is more we can do. Glasgow is determined to play its part and will continue to work with all of our partners to do all we can to tackle climate change.”

The council is working with a range of partners including Anglian Water, Bike Station, Climate Ready Clyde, Glasgow Life, Glasgow School of Art, Home Energy Scotland, Strathclyde University, Transport Scotland and Zero Waste Scotland.
