SCI SHORTS evolved from Glasgow City of Science’s involvement in the European Science TV & New Media Awards 2014, for which Glasgow was selected as one of three European cities to participate in the Young Jury Prize. Working alongside Glasgow City Council, Glasgow City of Science convened a panel of local teenagers to view the year’s nominated science documentaries and vote towards determining an overall winner.
To compliment this activity, City of Science challenged participants to create their own one-minute science films and submit in the 60 Second Science Mobile Movie Competition. The project was a great success, culminating in an awards ceremony with media work placements for the winners. The activity has since inspired numerous imitations, including the European Science TV & New Media Awards who have adopted the model as an official category.

This year Glasgow City of Science has once again been invited to participate in the European awards. Working in partnership with Glasgow Film Theatre / Glasgow Youth Film Festival, City of Science has developed Glasgow’s Young Jury into a miniature interactive film festival for secondary schools and community groups. Jurors will attend Glasgow Science Centre to watch the shortlisted documentaries together before breaking into facilitator-led group discussions and voting as part of an international panel.
On top of this, Glasgow City of Science partnered with GMAC Film to expand the filmmaking element into a more immersive and effective upskilling opportunity. SCI SHORTS 2015 challenges local filmmakers to produce one-minute dramas and documentaries, inspired by some of Glasgow’s scientific innovations. Participants were invited to attend a Story Development Day on Saturday 10th October where they heard from experts in three key subjects:
- Satellites & Space (presented by Alasdair Gow, Clyde Space)
- Personalised Medicine (presented by Dr Carol Clugston, University of Glasgow)
- 3D Digital Visualization (presented by Dr Yeshwanth Pulijala, Glasgow School of Art’s Digital Design Studio)
As well as hearing directly from the incredible science experts, filmmakers attended comprehensive drama and documentary story development workshops. SCI SHORTS participants were then given one week to create and submit their shorts films, demonstrating Glasgow’s distinctive science offer.
Both SCI SHORTS and Glasgow’s Young Jury will culminate in next week’s Showcase & Awards Event, at which the submissions will premiere, the audience will vote for winners and attendees will enjoy a food and drink reception. The SCI SHORTS Showcase & Awards Event will take place in Cineworld IMAX (at Glasgow Science Centre) on Wednesday 21st October, 18:00 – 20:00.
