It will mark the first time that the conference has been held in the UK since its inauguration, with previous host cities including Cape Town in South Africa, Montreal in Canada and Brisbane, Australia.

The conference will inject around £5 million into the local economy and secure some 15,000 hotel room nights, providing a welcome boost to the city’s hotels, restaurants, shops, bars and other businesses.

Dedicated to the advancement of pathology through education exchange, the 2020 conference will provide a platform to welcome delegates from across the world to share research and theories for scientific, technological and methodological advancement.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Conferencing business forms an integral part of the city’s economic strategy. Securing such an established and world renowned meeting as the Congress of the International Academy of Pathology, at a time when global competition in the market is incredibly fierce, is fantastic news for Glasgow.

“With an enviable portfolio of medical research and development credentials supported by a distinguished history of healthcare innovation, Glasgow is the perfect fit to host a world-leading medical conference on this scale.

“The future is bright for our city; and 2015 will see the completion of the new South Glasgow Hospital Campus, creating what will be the largest most advanced single NHS development in the UK, the biggest clinical care complex in Scotland and the largest hospital in Western Europe. This complex will close the gap between academia and working professionals, fostering knowledge exchange whilst simulating work on crucial research developments.”

The good news for the city comes on the back of further winning bids this year announcing Glasgow as the host city for the European Society of Hypertension and the International Society of Hypertension (ESH/ISH) Joint Scientific Congress and World Congress of Soil Science in 2022.

Professor Ray McMahon, Honorary Consultant Pathologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Secretary General-designate of the International Academy of Pathology, said: “The British Division of the International Academy of Pathology (including the UK, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands) is delighted to have been successful in our bid for the XXIII Congress of the IAP.

“We look forward to planning for 2020 and getting more than 3000 pathologists from around the world to Glasgow and Scotland, particularly anticipating our colleagues from mainland Europe through the European Society of Pathology.”

Neil Brownlee, Head of Business Tourism at VisitScotland, said: “I am delighted to learn that, with the support of the VisitScotland Conference Bid Fund, the Congress of the International Academy of Pathology will be coming to Glasgow in 2020.

“Business events are worth nearly £2 billion to Scotland’s economy and securing large-scale prestigious gatherings is vital in ensuring that this country continues to build on its reputation as a world-class events destination for all sectors.”
