The Next Generation Remote-Sensing Technologies project at University of Glasgow aims to explore and develop new advancements in uncooled infra-red detectors, novel edge-processed high-definition imagers, and the latest laser sensing techniques. These early-stage technologies hold significant promise for maturation and integration into cutting-edge remote sensing equipment.
Remote sensing technology is a cost-effective method for collecting data from a distance to monitor areas or objects. Typically using aircraft or satellites, it measures radiation emitted or reflected by a region, with special cameras capturing images. These images are processed into digital maps and can be overlaid with other spatial data.
Future products derived from these technologies could become major disruptors, enabling the creation of world-class systems tailored to meet emerging capability requirements across diverse sectors. Potential applications include military, medical diagnostics, energy monitoring, net-zero initiatives, security, and surveillance. The anticipated market value for these technologies is estimated at £40 million in the UK and £120 million from exports over the next decade.
