A Glasgow Asda has become the first branch in Scotland to offer pasta, coffee and toiletry refills to customers.
The supermarket giant’s eco-friendly initiative will form part of the Toryglen store in a bid to cut down on packaging.
From Monday, shoppers will be able to use their own containers to buy unpackaged products.
The company hopes it will encourage shoppers to be more environmentally conscious and help them “reduce, reuse or recycle” their packaging.
The new “refill zone” will include large wall-mounted dispensers, filled with cereals, coffee, tea and varieties of pasta and rice.
Toiletries will be available as well as laundry products, including stainless steel reusable bottles of various brands.
As well as using their own refillable containers, customers can buy pre-filled bottles, with the option of returning them at the store once used.
The supermarket giant hopes to make the “refill and reuse” scheme part of every Asda store.
usan Thomas, director of commercial sustainability at Asda, said: “We have chosen Scotland as the location for our second refill store because it is an important market for Asda and a place where we regularly receive constructive feedback from our customers.
“This feedback is very important to us as we refine our refill offering in stores and work towards a goal of making refill and reuse part of every shopping trip.
“With COP26 coming to Glasgow, there has certainly been an increase in interest in environmental issues across the country, so to see refill land in the host city and with such engaged customers is a really important moment for us.”
