Work has started on several sites south of the River Clyde to install the new infrastructure, with the rest of the city on track to follow as CityFibre implements one of the biggest city-wide full fibre rollouts in Europe – and the company’s biggest build to date.

The new full fibre network will mean gigabit-speed technology running all the way into your home by 2025, with no bottlenecks to slow you down whether you’re working, gaming or streaming.

Holyrood backing

And CityFibre’s investment was praised by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last month who called it “a vote of confidence in our approach to digital connectivity”.

“This investment comes at a crucial time during economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic which will require good digital connectivity to make sure nobody is left behind,” she said.

“Everyone should be able to access the fastest available broadband which is why this announcement by CityFibre is extremely welcome, not least for the jobs it will support. Crucially, it will help people, communities and businesses in Glasgow to access improved broadband speeds.”

Smart City

Full fibre connection can transform your online experience at home, particularly with many of us working from home and relying on our home internet for the foreseeable future.

Imagine a world where HD streaming isn’t a problem, no matter how many people are online.

And because it uses rays of light travelling down tiny glass tubes to carry data instead of electrical signals along traditional copper wires, it’s a more sustainable option that’s able to cope with whatever future demands we place on it.

Work is now underway to bring full fibre to homes and businesses across Glasgow. CityFibre has worked closely with Glasgow City Council since 2016 and connected more than 1,200 public sector sites, including hospitals, schools and council buildings as part of the local authority’s mission to make Glasgow a truly Smart City.

The full fibre digital infrastructure will now bring access to ultra-fast, future-proof, and extremely reliable digital connectivity to homes and businesses across the city. The network is not yet live, but once activated, services will be available from an increasing range of broadband providers.

Across the UK, CityFibre is already working with launch partner Vodafone to deliver next generation broadband services, with TalkTalk and other providers expected to join the network in the future.

David Cannon, CityFibre’s City Manager for Glasgow, has said: “The network, once built, will serve its connectivity needs for decades to come and will power future economic growth which will be particularly important in the recovery from the pandemic. We’re thrilled to get started in the city and cannot wait to connect the first homes and businesses to full fibre.”

Local jobs

Blantyre-based construction partner PMK Ltd has been chosen to lay the initial 1300km network in the south of the city. CityFibre and PMK will work in close partnership with Glasgow City Council and local communities to deliver a fast rollout with minimal disruption.
