EE has switched on 5G in Glasgow and Hamilton, where customers can now receive the latest mobile network technology.

The places are among new towns and cities across the UK that will receive EE’s 5G coverage, as independent tests from RootMetrics reveal it has the best performing 5G network, with the most coverage, in London, Birmingham and Cardiff.

EE was the first to launch 5G in the UK when six cities were switched on in May, including Edinburgh. Since then it has been building its network on a daily basis.

Today’s announcement means people in Glasgow and Hamilton are among the first in the country to benefit from the latest mobile phone network technology, which is set to revolutionise the way we live and work.

Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said: “Switching on 5G in more places is helping us deliver the best mobile experience to our customers, keeping them connected to the things that matter most.

"RootMetrics’ early 5G testing shows that we are a long way ahead in terms of 5G performance, and our engineers are continuing to build new sites every day, on our journey to keeping our customers connected 100 per cent of the time.”

Jane Wood, BT Group director for Scotland, said: “It’s great to see Glasgow and Hamilton amongst the first locations in the UK to welcome 5G. The new technology will enable a faster, more reliable mobile connection for both consumers and businesses in the area and is set to play a pivotal role in our lives.”

Stuart Patrick, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive and Glasgow City of Science and Innovation board chair, said: “We welcome plans to strengthen the city’s digital infrastructure, using technology to remain competitive, attract inward investment and develop the region’s overall skills base.

“5G will bring in a new era where everyone and everything is better connected, creating extensive opportunities for local businesses, students and residents – enabling ultrafast internet access to drive forward innovation across key sectors.”

According to the latest 5G testing by RootMetrics, EE’s 5G network achieved the highest average download speed and 5G availability in London, Birmingham and Cardiff. RootMetrics’ availability’ measure shows how often devices connected to 5G during download testing across each city.

5G is built on top of EE’s award winning 4G network – customers will connect to both 4G and 5G at the same time to get the best possible experience, even in the most crowded areas.
