Glasgow’s cycle hire scheme has passed a major milestone, with Voi bikes clocking up more than 1.1 million hires in less than nine months as growing numbers of people turn to shared e-bikes to travel around the city.
Demand hit a new high in July, with 304,644 hires – the busiest month since the scheme relaunched.
Usage is now 610% higher than under the previous scheme operator, showing just how popular Voi bikes are with riders.
That growing demand is being supported by a wider network of 195 live stations across the city, making it easier for people to pick up a bike close to home, work, public transport links and local destinations.
Last month’s record hire numbers also coincided with the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Voi supporting active travel during the event through free ride bundles for athletes, volunteers and staff, as well as public discounts and incentives for rides to and from Games venues.
Month-on-month growth in hires points to a scheme that is gathering real momentum, with more people turning to hire bikes as a simple and flexible way to move around Glasgow.
Councillor Angus Millar, City Convener for Transport and Climate, said: “One million hires in less than nine months is a major milestone and shows how cycle hire is becoming a key part of everyday travel in Glasgow.
“People are hiring Voi bikes to get to work, connect with public transport, visit local businesses and make short rides across the city that may previously have been made by car. That is exactly what we wanted to support when the scheme was relaunched – a practical, affordable and sustainable way for more people to get around.
“With almost 200 stations now live, and a growing network of safer cycling routes taking shape across the city, we are making it easier and more attractive for people to choose cycling. The continued growth in hires shows strong demand for the service, and it is encouraging to see more people discovering just how convenient hire bikes can be.”
