The European Capital of Innovation Award (iCapital) celebrates European cities that are building impactful “innovation ecosystems” to connect citizens, the public sector, academia, and business. Glasgow along with 24 other European Cities have been shortlisted for the prize since the Competition started in 2014. The title is currently held by Paris, and previous iCapital title holders have been Barcelona (2014) and Amsterdam (2016).

As a legacy project from Glasgow’s involvement in the competition, Glasgow conceived the idea of connecting the shortlisted iCapital ‘alumni’ cities through a pioneering digital collaboration platform which would nurture opportunities for collaboration, support ideas exchange between cities and add value to the existing innovation landscape. Crucially, the platform would create new and practical methodologies to encourage citizens and businesses to innovate and explore the optimal role of city governments in fostering city-wide innovation. Glasgow City of Science and Innovation partners will have exclusive access to the digital collaboration platform when it becomes live in Spring 2018. The digital platform will be augmented by an annual general meeting bringing together all of the alumni cities face-to-face.

As well as connecting European cities, the platform will connect public partners across Glasgow and the West of Scotland and enterprising businesses to create new collaboration opportunities that will drive innovation, unlock productivity and support inclusive growth in the city.

A selection of GCOSI partners will be invited to participate in developing and pilot the digital collaboration platform in early 2018. A public-facing website will showcase inspirational innovation case studies from the iCapital alumni cities and highlight live opportunities to connect and collaborate.
