The University of Strathclyde’s Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) is playing a critical role in changing the energy landscape, by accelerating the technologies and systems needed for power grids to deliver low carbon energy in the future.

The purpose-built, £12.5 million centre offers world-leading R&D facilities for the fast-expanding smart grid industry, with a small-scale electricity grid system for firms to test and demonstrate new smart grid technology. The set-up includes a highly configurable utility-grade medium and low voltage distribution network, realistic control room, industry-grade measurement and communications infrastructure, and extensive power hardware in the loop capabilities that support mid-TRL (Technology Readiness Level) and end-to-end systems testing under normal and fault conditions.

The facility supports accelerated prototype testing, systems evaluation and proving, and rapid debugging and pre-deployment testing, all supported by the Centre’s scenario playing and reconfiguration features. PDNC operates an industry membership programme with portfolio projects across the energy, transport and marine sectors.
