Two of Scotland’s leading artificial intelligence (AI) experts have joined forces to explore the potential impact of the technology in the world of business.

Edited by University of the West of Scotland’s Dr Muhammad Zeeshan Shakir and Professor Naeem Ramzan, the ‘AI for Emerging Verticals: Human-robot computing, sensing and networking’ book explores how companies in ‘vertical markets’ can use AI and machine learning (ML) to better understand their customers and bring more insight to their clients.

Vertical, or specialised, markets are selected areas of industry such as health care or transport, designed for a specialised consumer. This is in contrast to a horizontal market, which has a far wider consumer base – such as the computer.

ENHANCE CAPABILITIES

In AI for Emerging Verticals, Dr Shakir and Professor Ramzan demonstrate how, by adopting AI and ML software and services, businesses can create predictive strategies, enhance their capabilities, better interact with customers, and streamline their business processes.

The title, published by the Institute of Engineering and Technology in hardback and e-book, explores a range of novel concepts and cutting-edge research and developments towards designing these fully automated advanced digital systems.

The chapters focus on models and theoretical approaches to guarantee automation in large multi-scale implementations of AI and ML systems; protocol designs to ensure AI systems meet key requirements for future services such as latency; and optimisation algorithms to leverage the trusted distributed and efficient complex architectures.

NEXT LEVEL

Dr Shakir said: “Professor Ramzan and I have explored how artificial intelligence can be adopted by a wide range of organisations to take their work to the next level. The technology which is featured in the book potentially has a wide range of applications, in robotics, human computing, sensing and networking – all vital as we as a society demand faster, smarter services across the board.”

Professor Ramzan added: “AI for Emerging Verticals offers real insight into these rapidly developing technologies and showcases how AI is becoming more and more relevant to a wider audience.”
