A ‘Living Laboratory at Queen Elizabeth University

Plans are now underway to develop a ‘Living Laboratory’ at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to address the translation of innovation into standard clinical practice. The £46M project is one of 23 shortlisted across the UK for UKRI Strength in Places funding and is subject to a full stage application to be submitted in September 2019.

The University’s Clinical Innovation Zone at QEUH is part of the developing Glasgow Riverside Innovation District. The Innovation district which extends to the Universities West End campus provides collaborative space for industry partners, start-ups and spin-outs to work alongside Glasgow’s world class academics.

High-impact research projects with university involvement include:

  • PRECISION-Panc trial – advancing personalised medicine treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer, led by University of Glasgow and funded by Cancer Research UK.
  • CHART-ADAPT pilot programme ─ supporting improved detection and treatment of brain injury, run by the University of Glasgow, NHS GGC, Philips Healthcare and Aridhia Informatics Ltd.
  • Platform technology for precision medicine diagnostics ─by BioClavis, a spinout from Californian molecular profiling company BioSpyder, in collaboration with university researchers and the health service, and based at the Clinical Innovation Zone at the QEUH.

Economy Secretary Derek Mackay said:

“Manufacturing is crucial to our economy and is a sector we want to see flourish in Scotland.

“This is a notable milestone for the NMIS facility and given the importance of responding to the global climate emergency, I am particularly pleased the facility will be energy carbon neutral and it is great that the facility will lead by example and demonstrate what is possible.

“NMIS will deliver benefits for businesses across Scotland well before the building is complete including through the existing capability available at the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre which adds to the wider support available from our enterprise agencies to help companies improve their productivity.”

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Strathclyde principal, said: “It is great news that the plans for NMIS are progressing so quickly. Scotland has a vibrant manufacturing sector which is well placed for further innovation and growth.

“To achieve its fullest potential, it needs advanced facilities, resources and equipment, for use by highly qualified and skilled staff; NMIS will offer all of this.

“At Strathclyde – and across Scotland’s world-class universities – we have the drive, expertise and track record to support this highly collaborative venture and, with the NMIS partners, support the transformation of Scottish manufacturing.”
